lawn renovation & replacement
Harrington's Organic Land Care will work with you to determine the best approach to getting your lawn looking beautiful again!
Spot Seeding:
The perfect solution for bare or thin patches in your lawn. We prepare the soil and seed small areas throughout the lawn. Bare areas are scarified and appropriate grass seed is spread. A garden weasel is used to ensure the seed has good soil contact.
Renovation/Slice Seeding:
To thicken your lawn. We recommend this to improve thin lawns, those with large bare areas, or to introduce different grass varieties to lawns which need improved appearance and vitality. There are many new grass varieties currently available that are endophytic. Endophytic grasses are insect deterrent, and will help greatly by improving grass resistance. Slice seeding cuts the soil and directly places seed, therefore improving soil contact, moistness, and oxygen availability to germinating seed.
Replacement:
When starting over is the most effective solution. This is highly recommended if the entire lawn is out competed by weeds, has a lack of grass cover, or is entirely composed of undesirable grasses. First a non-selective herbicide is used to kill of existing vegetation. Then the lawn is over-seeded with new turf type varieties, and a starter fertilizer (NPK) is applied with a natural de-thatch, 1-2 compost tea application(s), Vita-Flow (germination enhancement), and soil conditioner. These elements, along with plenty of water and sunlight, will work together to provide the best growing conditions for your germinating seed.
Core Aeration:
Aeration is the removal of small cores of soil to allow air, moisture and applied compost down to the root zone. The core aerator will take a one to two inch plug of soil and grass, and replace it on the surface of the lawn. This is where it will break down and recycle air, organic matter, and nutrients back to soil structure of the lawn. The core aeration system works while systems that simply punch holes in the soil do not. The punctured hole will get air circulation, but the soil around it will become compacted and inevitably anaerobic. Proper core aeration works by allowing air circulation, water, fertilizer and our applied compost to reach greater depths into the subsoil. During drought times, the cores will allow rainfall to be absorbed by thirsty deep roots. When rain is heavy, the cores will allow more air circulation to increase evaporation of excess root moisture. Core aeration in conjunction with our Harrington's Compost Blend will not just provide you with a new topsoil, but the soil will be incorporated in the subsoil of your lawn as well.
